Construction of big water reservoirs is necessary to eliminate water shortage problem from the country, said Wapda Member Water Muhammad Amin. Speaking in a PTV programme he said immediate steps would have to be taken in that regard in order to secure available amount of water as future of the country hinges in better availability of water.
He said that besides construction of small dams, large water reservoirs were also necessary.
To a question, he said construction of big water reservoirs was imperative to speed up pace of economic development of the country.
He said present government was serious in construction of big water reservoirs.
To another question he said parliamentary and technical committees were formed in that regard. Parliamentary committee had given its interim report while meeting of technical committee was going on and it would submit its report soon, he added.
Though, a number of projects were running in the country to improve water availability, especially for agriculture sector but construction of new big water reservoirs could not be denied, he added.
Large dams would be launched after making the political consensus and removing all reservations of the concerned people, he added.
He said construction of new water reservoirs besides proper water management was need of the hour as the level of water was depleting in dams at an alarming proportion.
With the passage of time water demand was increasing while availability was decreasing as due to silting problem, existing capacity had adversely been affected, he showed concern.
Muhammad Amin said that due to shortage of large dams, huge amount of water went waste for which emergent measures would have to be adopted.
