Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Friday directed the banks and other national institutions to set up offices in Gwadar so that the port may start contributing to the national economy. He was chairing a high-level meeting to review the progress on the project. Ports and Shipping, Communications, Railways and Commerce ministers and other senior officials attended the meeting.
The prime minister was informed that the Gwadar Port was being completed ahead of schedule and would be inaugurated early next year.
He said the port will play a vital role in generating economic activity in Balochistan, create more job opportunities for the people of that area and usher in prosperity for the people.
The prime minister was informed that the coastal highway connecting Karachi with Gwadar has also been completed, while the feasibility for connecting Gwadar by rail would be completed by March 2005.
The National Highway Authority chairman said the roads were being built to link the remote areas of Balochistan with the port.
The meeting was also informed that expansion of Gwadar Airport has also begun.
