Cable operators demand action against video shops

13 Dec, 2004

Cable Operators Association (COA) has denied that cable operators were airing vulgar and offensive programmes and demanded of the government to take stern action against video shops for malicious propaganda. Speaking at a news conference on Sunday, Secretary General of COA Muhammad Imran Nadeem said that cable operators had put in place a modern mechanism to censor immoral programmes.
"We are strictly following the code of ethics prepared by Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) and never aired offensive programs and channels as being alleged by certain quarters," he added.
Nadeem accused that video shops owners are indulged in illegal practice of selling blue movies and CDs to youngsters.
He was of the view that this practice was not only earning bad name for the country but also damaging the character of young generation.
Secretary General of COA maintained that cable operators are doing national service by providing the people quality and healthier entertainment.
Responding to a question, Imran Nadeem said that cable operators who are offering services in Parliament Lodges and Diplomatic Enclaves had written a letter to Pemra to allow them (cable operators) to transmit all foreign channels for diplomats but it was refused by the authority.
It is pertinent to mention here that lawmakers have also time and again raised their voices against cable operators for showing objectionable channels and programmes.
