City Nazim Naimatullah Khan declared the first-ever City Games opened with the resolve to make it a regular feature of the city's culture. Addressing to the opening ceremony, the City Nazim described sports as an essential, healthy and constructive social activity imperative for promoting peace, love and tranquillity in the country. He was of the opinion that the holding of such sporting activities would channelise the energy of young generation towards constructive work and promoting healthy competition among them.
In this perspective, he proposed regular holding of such an event on annual basis. Squash legend Jehangir Khan lit the torch of the championship on the occasion while town Nazims led their respective teams in the march pass during opening ceremony.
The 25 sports included in the games are cricket, hockey, football, basketball, volleyball, shooting ball, badminton, tennis, table tennis, tae kwon do, judo karate, squash, boxing, snooker, marathon, body building, cycling, chess, malakhara, gymnastics, athletics, donkey cart racing etc. All the 18 towns of the city will participate under the inter-town championship competitions, which will formally start from Sunday (December 26). Apart from these 25 sports, five different events for special children along with events for women will also take place during the games.
These competitions will be held at various play grounds, stadiums and sport complexes all over the city including UBL Sports Complex, Asghar Ali Shah Stadium, Kakri Ground, Aga Khan Gymkhana, Peoples Sports Complex, City Sports Complex, Women Sports Complex, Islamia Club, Customs Club, TMC Ground, KGA Ground etc.
