The function held under the auspices of Pakistan Literary & Cultural Society to create awareness regarding the controversial Kalabagh Dam failed to attract any of the popular public representatives or prominent figures of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP). The function was going to held on the occasion of the launching of a book "Kalabagh Dam Aur Hamari Maishat" written by Syed Hussain Sabzwari, an unknown literary figure for the people of the province.
The people of the province are opposing the project by tooth and nail and its elected provincial assembly had passed a number of unanimous resolutions against it.
The expected important guests of the function, which were also published on the invitation card were including Minister of State for Water and Power, Engineer Amir Muqaam, Minister of State for Finance, Omar Ayub Khan, Minister of State for Information, Anisa Zeb Tahirkheli, former chairman Wapda, Shams-ul-Mulk, Deputy Speaker NWFP Assembly, Ikramullah Shahid and Nazim City District, Peshawar, Azam Khan Afridi.
Similarly, the number of those who were invited for speeches was about a dozen. The names of the speakers were including provincial president, PPP Rahimdad Khan, Agha Syed Ali Shah (PML-Q), Khawaja Mohammad Khan Hoti (PPP), former Justice Mian Burhanuddin, Mian Mohammad Akhtar Shafee, Professor Nisar Safdar of Pakistan Jamhoori Aman Party, Fanoos Gujjar, Muazam Butt advocate, Arbab Mohammad Ayub Jan (National Awami Party).
The list was beside other unknown figures was also including the name of L.K. Tressler, Mussarrat Hussain Khalil and Naseem Jhande Shah, a woman councillor from unknown union council of Peshawar city.
However, none of the guests of presidium and speakers except Muazam Butt and councillor Naseem Jhande Shah attended. The general public in general and newsmen who have arrived in the function were astonished over the absence of all expected participants.
In an attempt to hide failure of their function, one of the guest, who was also unknown to the participants announced that federal government has stopped the participation of the ministers as a report prepared by the technical committee of the project is going to publish in few days and they did not want to create confusion regarding the project.
The unknown figures that delivered their speeches on the important project like Kalabagh Dam were including Naila J. Diyal (Senior vice chairman, Pakistan Literary & Cultural Society, Shehzada Alamgir, Farah Naz Niazi Haji Anwar Khan and Gohar Ali of Musharraf Himayat Tehrik, another unknown organisation.
They in their speakers appreciated the policies of President General Pervez Musharraf and called for the construction of the Kalabagh Dam without any delay. They were of the view that the construction of the dam would not only increase hydel power generation but would also make the country self-sufficient in food items.
