The enactment of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) regime would bring lot of opportunities to Pakistani industrialists and exporters in the world market, said Najam Rehan, president, Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI), here on Monday.
Talking to reporters in his office he said that the WTO would provide a good chance to Pakistani exporters, manufacturers and industrialists to penetrate into the world market and earn a good space. "The main thing they have to keep in view is to improve the quality of their products to compete with other market economies," Rehan said.
He was of the view that the WTO would not affect Pakistan as the tariff was brought to the lowest ebb on directions of the World Bank (WB) and International Monetary Fund (IMF). "This," he said, "has resulted in very low duty tariff in Pakistan."
The RCCI chief observed that there is a dire need to hold seminars and training workshops to impart proper know how about the future challenges among the business community. He told the reporters that the RCCI joined hands with IPS for awareness campaign on the WTO.
He said that WTO would have no negative impacts on Pakistan's socio-economic structure, "but it would provide us a chance to enhance the quality of our products to penetrate forcefully into the world market."
The RCCI chief stressed on manufacturers and industrialists to utilise all possible resources and prepare themselves to face the negative impact of globalisation in general and in the WTO in particular, 'so that our industries and products could survive and better compete at the world level.'
Najam Rehan pointed out that low tariff rates are not a threat to Pakistani products nor it will harm the industry. It would increase the chances of winning market space in the world.
Giving the example of China, Thailand and Malaysia he said that despite low tariff these countries have developed surprisingly well.
