PIA's controversial deal

16 Jan, 2005

Senator Nisar Memon, a treasury member and head of Senate Committee, empowered to investigate PIA's controversial deals, has expressed serious concerns over the reported sale of PIA's A-300 and Boeing 747s. Prior to Memon's statement, two Senators from the Opposition had gone public with serious reservations on PIA's controversial deals and mismanagement. Nisar Memon stated that PIA has failed to provide specific details concerning its recent purchases of Boeing-777s, leasing of A-310s etc.
Whilst these controversies are still afresh, the airline has embarked on yet another controversy. It seems that PIA's management cares two hoots about the Senate or what appears in the national Press. This reported corruption cannot go unchecked, unless it has the support of Islamabad.
The recent debacle during Umra, and the pathetic role of PIA, following public outrages and calls for accountability, make one shudder with resentment.
This was followed by the near air-miss involving a PIA aircraft, followed by the Islamabad incident. Before that a PIA Fokker crash landed at Chitral. The blood sample collected by CAA of the Fokker captain is reported to be not satisfactory.
All these point out an impending major disaster. If God Forbid such a fatal accident were to take place, the government cannot escape the blame.
