British jet makes emergency landing

A British holiday plane carrying 177 passengers made an emergency landing in London on Saturday after losing the front wheel from its undercarriage, airport officials said. The plane landed safely, but it was not immediately clear whether there had been any casualties, a spokeswoman for Gatwick Airport in south London said. "The next step is to get all the passengers off and check they are okay," she said.
The Thomas Cook Airways plane reported that its front wheel had come off shortly after taking off from Gatwick for the Bulgarian capital Sofia at 2:35 pm (1435 GMT).
The pilot turned back to Gatwick, where the aircraft made an emergency landing with fire engines and ambulances standing by as a precaution.
