Kashmiris advised to join mainstream British politics

17 Jan, 2005

British Kashmiris should support only that political party in the next British general elections which commits itself to the just cause of Kashmir, said Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly member for Overseas Kashmiris in the UK Chaudhry Mohammad Khan. He was speaking at a dinner he hosted in honour of Lord Mayor of City Council Peterborough Raja Akhtar Hussain here on Saturday.
Khan urged Kashmiris youth to join the mainstream British politics to make their voice heard both in respect of the Kashmir issue and other problems being faced by them.
British Kashmiris, were contributing in the development of multi-cultural British society hence he impressed upon the United Kingdom Government to respond to their concerns by playing its role in finding a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue in accordance with aspirations of Kashmiris.
Despite the flexibility shown by Pakistan, he said, India continued to be pursuing an intransigent policy hence there was no meaningful headway towards settlement of the Kashmir issue.
He said India should accept the United Nations Security Council resolutions calling for a UN supervised plebiscite to determine the future of Kashmir. The international community, he said, should ensure a peaceful solution of the Kashmir issue which was a threat to the regional peace before backing Indian quest to occupy a permanent slot at UN Security Council.
In his remarks Mayor of Peterborough Akhtar Hussain praised Kashmiris who had earned a respectable place in various fields of the British society.
Acting President of the Muslim Conference United Kingdom Raja Mohammad Ayub, in his remarks said, the major powers needed to apply more pressure on India for a just solution of the dispute. British Kashmiris, he said, should not relax their efforts to espouse their cause at every level.
