Weight tolerance for exports raised to 10 percent

18 Jan, 2005

The Collectorate of Customs (Export) has increased the weight toleration threshold for export consignments from five percent to 10 percent. The decision, effective from February 1, has been taken to further facilitate the trade and exports and to maintain uniformity in all the collectorates. The Collectorate has issued a notice, saying that in future all export consignments with a weight difference of up to 10 percent at the time of examination would be allowed clearance without any penal action.
However, the actual difference in weight will be recorded on the copies of goods declaration (GDs), which are presented to the Customs and Sales Tax authorities for the purpose of claiming duty drawback and sales tax refund.
The notice further said that in case of more than 10 percent variation in weight, the cases of misdeclaration would be constituted and sent for adjudication.
The shipment would not be allowed till the completion of the adjudication proceedings, it added.
