Lack of quorum puts off Punjab Assembly session

18 Jan, 2005

Punjab Assembly proceedings could not be held on Monday due to quorum problem, which shows complete lack of interest of the legislators in the 18th session. Moreover, the Press Gallery Committee boycotted the proceedings in protest against the Imamia Students Organisation (ISO)'s attack on journalists and Lahore Press Club few days ago. They also condemned indifferent attitude of the police, which was present in a large, but deliberately refrained from defusing the situation.
Punjab Law Minister, Muhammad Raja Basharat and Opposition MPA Rana Aftab rushed to the Press Gallery to defuse the situation. The journalists demanded that the Punjab government should take an action against the responsible police officers.
The Punjab Law Minister assured the newsmen that appropriate action would be taken and he would commit this on the floor of the House.
However, the Law Minster did not have the chance to take the floor, as the House had to adjourn without conducting business till next morning due to quorum problem, which was pointed out by the Opposition.
The opposition extended full support to the Press Gallery and condemned the incident.
