The agricultural research needs to be reformed to meet the World Trade Organisation (WTO) challenges. This was stated by Pakistan Agricultural Research Council's (PARC) Technology Transfer Institute director Dr A. D. Sheikh at a seminar on "An overview on the constraints, challenges and strength of agricultural research system in the Punjab" here at the Ayub Agricultural Research Institute.
He stressed the need to enhance operational budget for strengthening agricultural research.
Lack of co-operation between agriculture sector departments and institutions was a hampering improvement in the agricultural research system.
The seminar participants decided to discuss and suggest some practical measures to strengthen co-operation between various research institutions and departments. Dr Sheikh told the participants about the prevalent situation and practices regarding relationship between livestock and crops.
He said livestock was a good source of income for the farmers so they should opt for livestock rearing besides agriculture.
