Transport department fails to check overcharging

24 Jan, 2005

The Transport Department miserably failed in checking of overcharging of fares from the commuters coming from various cities to provincial metropolis after celebrating Eid ul Azha. It has become a routine of the bus crew to charge exorbitant rates from the commuters particularly on the occasion of Eid. The bus conductors have charged 50-70 percent extra from the commuters on different routes.
It is pertinent to mention here that buses have charged excessive fares from the commuters coming from Sargodha, Mianwali, Multan, Hafizabad, Mandi Bahauddin, Chakwal, Khushab, Rawalpindi, Khanewal, Faisalabad, Jhang, Vehari, Pakpatan and Toba Tek Singh to Lahore as these far-flung cities were totally lacking attention of the responsible authorities.
On receipt of information regarding overcharge of fares from buses, the Transport Department took decision to constitute special teams to check the fare rate and on spot action against the culprits. But neither any member of so-called teams and police was seen anywhere to ensure charging of fixed fares.
