Taiwanese cabinet resigns

25 Jan, 2005

Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian's cabinet resigned en masse on Monday to pave the way for a reshuffle after his pro-independence party was defeated in legislative elections last month. Chen is expected to name a heavyweight in his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Kaohsiung Mayor Frank Hsieh, as premier at a news conference at 9:00 am (0100 GMT) on Tuesday, replacing Yu Shyi-kun who resigned with the rest of the cabinet.
The new cabinet will take office on February 1 along with the new parliament.
