Artificial salt shortage being created

27 Jan, 2005

Artificial shortage of salt was being created by reducing its production by some salt producers for their ulterior motives and the situation needs to be checked by concerned government departments. Mian Abuzar Shad, PIAF vice-chairman and convenor of LCCI Standing Committee on Mining and Mineral Development, expressed these views while talking to a delegation of salt traders here on Wednesday, disclosed a PIAF' spokesman. President Salt Traders Association Mohammad Riaz led the delegation.
Mian Abuzar Shad said that Mining Contractors were exploiting the situation by not excavating salt in required quantity, thus creating multiple problems for businessmen dealing in salt export. He urged the government to ensure enhanced production of salt and take action against all those who were trying to create artificial shortage of the commodity.
"Pakistani salt was being sent to India for its further export to other countries," he added.
He suggested to the government to make arrangements for the export of salt after its value addition, as this would certainly increase the export volume of the country.
