Punjab Population Welfare Minister Nasim Lodhi said non-governmental organisations (NGOs) should supplement the efforts of the government aimed at controlling rapid population growth so that better health facilities could be made available to the citizens, besides improvement in their living standard. Nasim Lodhi has expressed these views while addressing a function held to mark the Population Day here on Tuesday.
MPA Perveen Sikandar Gill, Secretary Welfare Qazi Afaq Hussain and other officers of the department were also present.
The minister said that high rate of population growth in the country was assuming dangerous proportion and it was need of the hour to overcome this problem.
"It is unfortunate that majority of country's population is living below the poverty line. I appreciate the efforts of NGOs in providing basic health facilities to low income people," she added.
She further said the activities of the government and NGOs were not limited to family planning only but they were also engaged in the field of mother and child health, AIDS control, safe delivery as well as malaria and TB treatment.
