Altria Group Inc, parent of cigarette maker Philip Morris USA, rose nearly 2 percent to $64.40 after The Wall Street Journal reported on the US government's efforts to settle its fraud and racketeering case against large tobacco companies.
The Dow Jones industrial average was up 28 points, or 0.26 percent, at 10,593 and the Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 4 points, or 0.36 percent, at 1,188. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 4 points, or 0.18 percent, at 2,011.
