THE RUPEE: good dollar supply sustains parity

The rupee-dollar parity rates maintained their previous levels in the interbank market on Thursday for buying and selling at 59.38 and 59.40, respectively. According to the market sources, the rupee held its firmness due to strong supply of dollars, dealers said. The dollar fell versus the major currency units in the world markets, they added.
The rupee, however, gained 15 paisa in relation to the euro for buying and selling at Rs 77.25 and Rs 77.55, dealers said.

According to the currency dealers, the dollar's trading commenced at Rs 59.65 and Rs 59.75 on buying and selling counters, respectively against Rs 59.55 and Rs 59.75 of Wednesday. There was no change in the dollar's value during the day's trading, and opening rates continued to prevail throughout the day, the dealers said.
Similarly, the rupee remained under pressure and further lost its value against the pound sterling. The British pound was traded at Rs 112.55 and Rs 113.00 on buying and selling counters, respectively as compared to Rs 112.25 and Rs 112.50 of Wednesday, they added.
The dollar opened at Rs 59.70 (buying) and Rs 59.80 (selling) against the last rate. It did not observe any further change in the second spell, and closed at Rs 59.70 (buying) and Rs 59.80 (selling).
Pound sterling opened at Rs 111.90 (buying) and Rs 112.20 (selling) against the previous rate. It did not observe any change in the second spell, and closed at Rs 111.90 (buying) and Rs 112.20 (selling).
