President General Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday said terrorism poses a threat to modern societies and called upon the international community to co-operate in fighting off the malaise and also addressing the underlying causes. "Terrorism or extremism has no religion and we must reject false notions of clash of civilisations, especially conflict between Islam and the West," he urged while addressing the joint sitting of the Philippine Congress.
In his widely appreciated address, the President touched upon a host of issues affecting the world and said Pakistan rejects terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.
"Pakistan is part of international coalition against terrorism and our role has won respect for the country," stated the President, as Philippine elected representatives applauded his commitment to stamp out the menace.
However, he said, the fight against terrorism should not only address the visible manifestations but also the root causes.
"We must stand together to fight this danger," he emphasised.
Referring to his strategy of enlightened moderation, he said it is aimed at urging the Muslim nations to do more to reject extremism and intolerance and promote socio-economic development.
It also urges the western nations to help resolve longstanding disputes that have caused so much pain to the Islamic world.
President Musharraf said the concept of enlightened moderation may also have relevance to the Philippines and called upon the Muslim community in Mindanao to strive to be dynamic, vibrant, progressive and loyal part of the Philippines, contribute to strength and prosperity of the Far Eastern country.
At the same time, the Pakistani leader urged to respect the rights, traditions and culture of Muslims to enable them to live in harmony with the larger Philippine society.
He asked the distinguished assembly of Philippine leaders to promote harmony between civilisations and faiths and add moral voice to help resolve issues that divide nations.
"Democracy is a system that responds to aspirations of people, each country, therefore, evolves a model of democracy based on the concept of participation and empowerment of the people but tailored to its own environment."
He said the pursuit of closer friendship and co-operation with the Philippines also reflects Pakistan's desire to expand co-operation with East Asia as part of Islamabad's Vision East Asia policy.
On his just concluded visit to New Delhi, the President said he had "important and positive" talks with the Indian leadership.
"I am encouraged by my interaction with Indian leaders," he said.
Both sides, he said, realise that the historic opportunity created by the improvement in bilateral relations must be seized to address the long-standing Kashmir dispute with determination, courage and flexibility for a final settlement.
"Our success will usher in a new era of durable peace, trust and confidence that would ensure a bright future for the region and for Asia."
The President also informed the gathering about democracy gaining strength in the country through local government system, key political reforms, a system of checks and balances and unprecedented representation of women in all tiers of the government.
