Proposal for raising Railways fares

22 Apr, 2005

It is shocking that the Pakistan Railways (PR) has submitted its proposal to the government to increase the fares upto 8 percent taking advantage of inflationary trend in the country, The railways authorities also gave strange statement that the proposed increase in fares will not burden the common man.
Actually, they know that the common man, who is already on the verge of death due to rapid inflation and poverty, one more calamity will not be a disaster for him.
PR has already increased its fares several times. Despite rising fares, it should curtail its extraordinary expenditures since thousands of employees are working without outstanding performance and no particular improvement in the present travelling system.
During the nine months of this fiscal year, the rate of inflation has increased by 9.06 percent and the government is unable to control it. Under the circumstances, any increase will create more problems for the general public who are not only under a dire situation and are prepared for strong protest and agitation on the streets.
The government is earnestly requested to drop the proposal of PR fur increase in fares and take effective measures to lessen inflation in the country. The government is also requested to announce a relief package for the poor in the forthcoming budget to assuage the financial hardships of the common man who is struggling hard to survive.
