The ministry of science and technology has approved a development project to safeguard people living in coastal areas and to avert tsunami-like disaster and to increase their income. The National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) will be the executing agency of the project that will be launched in Karachi, according to a press release issued here on Monday. Elaborating objectives of the project "Survey for the Extension of Continental Shelf of Pakistan from 200 to 350 nautical mile", sources said it would extend the jurisdiction of the country in accordance with the article 76 of United Nations Convention on the Law of Sea (UNCLOS).
The project will not only help in boosting the economy of the country but the data obtained through it will also provide sound basis for the future research and offshore exploration programmes.-PR
