Lining of watercourses: directive to accelerate pace of work

The Project Director Programme Monitoring Unit (PMU) Sindh National Programme for Improvement of Watercourse (NPIW), Mohammad Younis Dagha, has directed the On Farm Water Management (OFWM) to accelerate the pace of on-going lining work of watercourses to achieve objectives of the project. He was presiding over the review meeting of on-going development work being carried out under the NPIW by the OFWM of Hyderabad and Dadu districts here on Thursday.
Addressing the meeting, Younis Dagha advised the officers concerned to keep close co-ordination with the irrigation department while designing watercourses and to ensure that the designing of watercourses was based on the bed level, Full Supply Level (FSL) of minor and sanctioned cross-section of watercourse data provided by Sindh Irrigation Department. Besides parameter of command area of concerned watercourses should also be considered while designing the watercourses to ensure judicious water supply to the growers, he added.
He said that under the instruction of the Sindh Chief Minister and the provincial Chief Secretary, the Additional Secretary Irrigation Khadim Hussain Memon has been nominated as the focal person for the implementation of NPIW and advised the field staff to co-ordinate with him in case of any difficulty on account of irrigation department for the implementation of the project work.
He said that different vigilant and quality monitoring teams from Federal, provincial government departments and the World Bank management would inspect the work quality and designing of watercourses as such he directed the technical/field staff of OFWM not to compromise over the quality of work failing which action would be taken against them.
He informed the meeting that a problem shooting committee has also been formed within the department and advised the field staff to co-ordinate with the members of the committee in case of facing any technical difficulty during designing or implementing construction work.
Referring the problems mentioned by DDOs of OFWM, the Project Director directed the provincial authority of OFWM for providing required instruments and vehicles to the field staff to expedite and to ensure perfect result of the development work.
