Labour Day will be observed throughout the country on Sunday (May 1) to pay tributes to those who laid down their lives in 1886 in Chicago for the workers' rights. Various labour organisations will take out processions and hold seminars to highlight problems of the workers. A number of labourers were killed in Haymarket, Chicago, in May 1886, who were demanding an eight-hour day, when police opened fire on them. Information minister Sheikh Rashid has appreciated the role of the labour class in the development and progress of the country and said the government is taking every possible step to facilitate them.
In his message on May Day, he said workers are the backbone of economy whom the government will never ignore while chalking out country's economic policies. He will address a labour rally in Peshawar on Sunday to mark the day.
