Musharraf may be briefed on local government amendments

04 May, 2005

National Reconstruction Bureau (NRB) chairman Daniyal Aziz is likely to brief President Pervez Musharraf on Thursday regarding proposed amendments in the Local Government (LG) Ordinance 2000 to empower District Co-ordination Officers (DCOs) to conduct LG polls after dissolving district governments, sources told Business Recorder on Monday. The NRB chairman will also brief the President on making certain other amendments in the ordinance, allowing MNAs or MPAs to keep additional slots of district or tehsil nazim under the new LG system, sources added. It was learnt that new administrators would be appointed after dissolution of local governments by May 15, 2005.
Provincial governments have already returned the amended draft of the proposed version of LG Ordinance to NRB that would be presented to the President on Thursday, sources said. Chief ministers and governors have also agreed with the NRB over the issue.
