Afghan pop singer Nasrat Parsa died late Sunday after being attacked following a performance on his first Canadian tour, police said. "He was confronted by three males outside his hotel. They knew who he was, that he was a singer, but I don't know if there is any relationship between them at this time," said police spokesperson Constable Tim Fanning. One man has been arrested in connection with the attack, police said. Parsa was approached by fans seeking an autograph outside his hotel after a performance at Vancouver's Queen Elizabeth Theatre and a scuffle broke out, police said.
Parsa was punched and fell down some stairs, hitting his head on his way down. He died in hospital a few hours later.
Parsa had performed around the world, including Australia, Germany, Holland and England. He recorded 10 albums and was very popular among young Afghans.
