Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers & Exporters Association (Prgmea) has again invited the attention of central board of revenue (CBR) towards non-availability of potassium permanganate (KMnO4) which is used in chemical blasting of denim jeans. In a press statement here on Wednesday, Chairman Prgmea, Ijaz A. Khokhar complained that potassium permanganate which was available in the open market with rate of Rs 5,000 for 50 kg pack is now being sold at the rate of Rs 4,000 per kg, hence the cost of the chemical used now exceed the cost of the jeans.
He observed that potassium permanganate used in chemical blasting of denim jeans (trousers) is a must in the current fashion scenario prevailing in EU and USA.
He appealed the government that the modality be worked out for the import of this chemical by manufacturing units themselves.
He added that the industry understand the objections being raised by certain agencies about its misuse but it is unfortunate that steps are taken without consulting stakeholders. He asked the government to look into the problem and resolve the problem of the textile value added industry.
