The opposition in the National Assembly denounced police officials alleged involvement in a rape case and accused the government of bailing out some of influential. Speaking in reference to a recent rape case here in Shahzad Town police station, the opposition doubted the role of some high government functionaries in changing the direction of investigation to save the actual culprits.
A teenage girl was picked up from a police picket and was reportedly gang-raped by some 'drunken' police officials in the federal capital police station during last month.
The issue, after being reported, immediately came under discussion at different international fora, portraying negative image of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the role of police.
Pointing towards the tragic incident in the Lower House, PPPP woman lawmaker Fauzia Wahab said the aggrieved family was still waiting for justice.
She accused the government of favouring the actual culprits behind the pitiful incident.
According to media reports, four police officers including a Deputy Superintendent of Police and Station House Officer were suspended while one police official was arrested regarding the case.
Taking serious notice of the outrageous incident, President Musharraf had ordered the concerned authorities to keep him updated about the progress of the inquiry. Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz also summoned Islamabad police chief Talat Mahmood Tariq and scolded him over the incident.
However, Fauzia Wahab was of the belief that the SHO, who according to her, is the actual culprit was still moving freely while a police constable has been terminated to play down the whole issue. She demanded of the authorities to take strict action against the involved police personnel so that such incidents do not occur in the future.
It was not the first highhandedness of police officials, as a second year student of Allama Iqbal Girls College, Sialkot was also victimised by the policemen, who was reportedly gang-raped when she approach them for justice.
There are so many other cases that do not come to the limelight due to pressure from influential people, having contacts with people in power.
Speaking on another point of order, a treasury member Gayan Chand Singh also drew the attention of the Speaker Amir Hussain on alleged kidnapping of some children from his constituency.
He said that the government has completely failed to recover the children who have been kidnapped by some influential criminals. Beside these serious issues, the government also came under fire over negligence in running the house according to rules and regulations.
MMA MNA Maulana Muhammad Khan Sherani once again complained to the Speaker Amir Hussain for not publishing house reports in Urdu language.
He said that all reports should also be published in Urdu language according to the 1973 Constitution.
The other legal issue was raised by PPPP's Naveed Qamar, who said that all reports, which government presents in the house, should also be referred to the concerned standing committees for discussion. However, Speaker Amir Hussain reserved his ruling over these issues.
