Water flow: rotation plan reintroduced

15 Jun, 2005

The Director, Left Bank Canal Area Water Board, Badin, on Monday announced reintroduction of rotation programme with effect from June 14. According to the board, this step has been taken in view of decline in water flow in River Indus upstream of Kotri Barrage and added that normal condition would be restored as soon as the situation improved.
The board announcement was termed as contradictory to the directive of Sindh chief minister for abandoning the rotation system, as it would have negative impact on rice and sugarcane crops.
It may be mentioned that the chief engineer Sukkur Barrage at the time of handing over the three canals - Nusrat, Nara and Nasir canals - to Rangers, had said that it was imperative in view of the directive of Sindh Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim and provincial irrigation minister to stop rotation practices and to ensure transparent distribution of available water resources to growers to avoid any set back to cotton crop.
