Supreme Court to have five benches next week

25 Jun, 2005

A petition seeking bail pending hearing of a request for suspension of sentence of Javed Hashmi is listed before the Second Bench of the Supreme Court for next Monday. The Bench reconstituted because of changes that will follow the coming retirement of Chief Justice Nazim Hussain Siddiqui and induction of Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary as the 19th incumbent on Thursday in the next week.
A 48-page cause list, released here on Friday, contained the composition of five benches--four full and one of division--that will function despite the start of three-month long summer vacation.
Present Chief Justice Nazim Hussain Siddiqui and Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar, who is also Acting Chief Election Commissioner, will not be hearing any cases during the week.
Justice Siddiqui was reported to be clearing his desks, both administrative and judicial, and preparing his valedictory address to his colleagues and members of the bar.
Javed Hashmi's petition, moved by Muhammad Akram Sheikh, has been listed before the Second Bench comprising Justice Javed Iqbal, Justice Mian Shakirullah Jan and Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk.
Majority of the cases are appeals in service matters by State Bank of Pakistan and Pakistan Telecommunications Company Limited against the decisions of the Federal Service Tribunal, while a dozen, or so, are against Establishment Division's determination of seniority in the service.
The composition of the benches will be:
FIRST BENCH: Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary, Justice Rana Baghwandas and Justice Saiyed Saeed Ashhad.
SECOND BENCH: Justice Javed Iqbal, Justice Mian Shakirullah Jan and Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk.
THIRD BENCH: Justice Hamid Ali Mirza, Justice Sardar Muhammad Raza Khan and Justice Muhammad Nawaz Abbasi.
FOURTH BENCH: Justice Khalil-ur-Rahman Ramday, Justice Falak Sher and Justice M Javed Buttar.
FIFTH BENCH: Justice Faqir Muhammad Khokhar and Justice Tassadduq Hussain Jillani.
