The National Database Regulatory Authority (Nadra) has accepted a proposal of Central Board of Revenue (CBR) to compile a national database on vehicles plying in the country, and will control smuggling of cars in future.
CBR official told Business Recorder here on Sunday that the CBR has approached different departments, including Nadra and provincial excise departments to formulate a comprehensive database on imported cars. Nadra has accepted the proposal of CBR and in this regard, the tax the CBR authorities will work out modalities for compilation of data.
In principle, the CBR is ready to grant amnesty, but a solid fool-proof system is needed to prevent smuggling of cars in future.
The CBR has given a special assignment to a senior customs official to do research work on smuggling of cars from neighbouring countries. A custom officer has been given special duty to forthwith submit report on the smuggling of cars from Afghanistan. This will help the CBR to take precautionary measures in future, officials added.
There is no use of amnesty scheme in current circumstances because the number of smuggled cars will again increase due to absence of computerised database and effective check on such vehicles. The only way to check the smuggling of cars is to use database for tracking any vehicle plying in the country.
