07 Jul, 2005

The officials of Irrigation and Revenue Department, Sindh and the police have started evacuating people from all the Katcha areas between Guddu-Sukkur-Kotri barrages to avert any loss of life due to expected floods, official sources told UPP here on Wednesday.
Sindh Governor Ishratul Ibad and Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim are keeping round-the-clock vigil on the flood situation.
Around 20,000 acres of Katcha area between Guddu and Sukkur barrages had already been inundated in floodwaters and more area is likely to be flooded following increase in water level at River Indus. Boats and makeshift rafts are also being used in several areas. Sandbags have also been placed at crucial points along the bunds in the area, while the irrigation staff has been put on high alert.
