08 Jul, 2005

Justice Sheikh Abdul Rashid of the Lahore High Court (LHC) has summoned the Faisalabad District Police Officer (DPO), Jaranwala Police Station Inspector Jamshed and other policemen to reply in a habeas corpus petition on July 13.
The court had directed Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Major Mubashar (Retd), who is Incharge Police Training Center Chung, to investigate the complaint of petitioner Haji Asghar that police illegally detained three citizens.
Petitioner Asghar said Inspector Jamshed and policemen Muhammad Abbas, Abid, Mazhar and others had illegally detained Imran Younas, Rizwan and Asif and tortured them. The court deputed a bailiff to find the detained and produce them before the court.
The bailiff produced Younas before the court and reported that according to police, Rizwan and Asif were required in a dacoity case. Younas was not wanted in any case. Younas informed the court that police had arrested eight other people in the dacoity case, but the complainant of the case testified before area magistrate Zeeshan Azam that none of the 10 arrested was involved in the offence, on which the magistrate ordered the police to release all of them. He said police released all of them except Rizwan and Asif.
The police had denied the charge on which Justice Rashid deputed SSP Mubashar to investigate the detention of those two men. The SSP reported that complaint was true on which the court summoned the DPO and other policemen to appear in person at the next hearing.
