Partly Facetious: is it angling for Musharraf's favour?

21 Jul, 2005

"Interesting!"
"For a change I think we both are on the same wavelength."
"What wave length?"
"We are thinking the same thing."
"OK, I'll bite. What was I thinking?"
"The directive from the federal government that candidates participating in the forthcoming local bodies cannot display President Musharraf's photograph to gain political mileage in their campaign."
"You are so right."
"It was interesting news and I was sure this time we were both thinking the same thing."
"You think these guys actually believe the results of the referendum?"
"Nah! Nobody could be that naïve. I don't think even the President believes the results of the referendum though he would never say so, of course."
"Of course! But why this silly directive then?"
"Maybe, the guy issuing it wanted a favour out of Musharraf."
"Well, I can't think of any other reason so perhaps you are right."
"But do we know who came up with this condition?"
"Yep. Acting Chief Election Commissioner Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar who presided over the meeting to finalise the draft Code of Conduct."
"So this condition is likely to become part of the Code of Conduct for contesting candidates in the Local Government Elections?"
"Indeed."
"Can they use BB's photograph?"
"At their peril."
"And Nawaz Sharif's?"
"They might be incarcerated for treason there..."
"Chaudhry Shujaat's?"
"Can't imagine anyone using his photograph unless his wife, or children..."
"Or his cousin who owes the CMship to him!"
"That's right. But I believe he sports the picture of Quaid-e-Azam and Musharraf."
"Never heard of Musharraf's picture any where in the Punjab!"
"He keeps it in his wallet."
"Don't be facetious."
"Why not? If the code makers were being facetious so why can't I?"
"Indeed."
