The United States froze the assets of six nephews of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein on Thursday, accusing them of funding Iraqi insurgents. "This action targets the money flows of former regime elements actively supporting attacks against coalition forces and the Iraqi people," said Stuart Levey, the US Treasury's under-secretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, in a statement.
Treasury designated the six men under an executive order, which allows the blocking of assets of the former Iraqi regime, its senior officials and their family members.
The United States is also submitting the names to the United Nations with the recommendation that the world body require its member states to also identify and freeze their assets.
The Treasury named the six men as:- Yasir Sabawi Ibrahim Hasan al-Tikriti; Omar Sabawi Ibrahim Hasan al-Tikriti; Ayman Sabawi Ibrahim Hasan al-Tikriti; Ibrahim Sabawi Ibrahim Hasan al-Tikriti; Bashar Sabawi Ibrahim Hasan al-Tikriti; Sa'd Sabawi Ibrahim Hasan al-Tikriti
The men are the sons of Saddam's half brother and former presidential adviser Sabawi Ibrahim Hasan al-Tikriti.
