Iran seeks to buy raw sugar

09 Aug, 2005

The Government Trading Corporation of Iran (GTC) is tendering to buy up to 120,000 tonnes of bulk raw cane sugar, a GTC official told Reuters on Monday. The sugar would be in up to three 40,000 tonne consignments. Accepted origins would be Brazil, Australia and South Africa.
Shipment would be between October 15 and November 15, with a bidding deadline of September 10.
The GTC, which is in charge of state imports of key goods, in May cancelled a previous tender to buy 30,000 tonnes of Brazilian raw cane sugar after what it said were changes made to its purchasing procedures.
State Iranian media also reported the country was suspending sugar imports in the year to March 2006 to support Iranian sugar producers.
But in July Iran's Commerce Minister said imports would be undertaken in this period if needed.
