Federal Minister for Housing and Construction and President Unikariens Syed Safwanullah has said the debates and speech contests played significant role in the tradition of a nation. He was addressing a special session of Unikariens' Bazm-e-Mubahisa, an association of the old boys of the University of Karachi.
Safwanullah observed that in a society where tradition of arguments and exchange of views disappeared the social deterioration set in, therefore it was necessary that tradition of dialogue should be kept alive and we all should make efforts to develop it.
He also expressed dismay over gradual deterioration in extracurricular activities and said we all were responsible for that state of affairs.
The new generation was very talented and wanted to maintain relation with the pen and literature but there was no one to lead them in that pursuit. He emphasised the literacy and intellectual people would have to play their role in that regard.
Ziauddin University vice chancellor and former Federal Secretary Shahid Aziz Siddiqui speaking on the occasion observed most of the people, at the helm of affairs, were eminent debators during their student days.
Bazm-e-Mubahisa Chairman Mehfooz Yar Khan Advocate said the debates inculcated the habit of tolerance among the members of society.
Renowned debators of the period ranging from 1950 to 1990 took part in the function. Others who spoke on the occasion included Professor Raees Alvi, Professor Kafeel Ahmed, Professor Mehmood Ghaznavi, Wali Ahmed Rizvi, Mohammad Iqbal Khan, Seema Raza, Rukhsana Zahoor, Anwar Ali Roomi, Azizuddin Shah, Zahoor Ahmed Dhalloo, Junaid lqbal, Ali Hasan Sajid, Tayyaba Mateen, Khalid Mumtaz Advocate and Maqsood Yar Khan Advocate.-PR
