Hungary maize crop seen higher

18 Aug, 2005

Hungary's maize crop could exceed forecasts as cool, rainy weather has benefited the crop, business daily Napi Gazdasag said citing grain association officials.
The total maize crop is seen reaching 9 million tonnes, up from last year's 8.9 million tonnes and above the association's mid-July estimate for 8.2 million tonnes.
The nine million tonne figure would also be at the upper end of the agriculture ministry's 8.5-9 million tonne estimate from August 5.
The ministry said around 2.5 million tonnes of maize will be offered up from European Union intervention.
