Local government system basis of democracy: Prime Minister

Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said on Thursday that peaceful and orderly conduct of local government polls in the country showed that people believed in a stable democracy and wanted it to flourish.
Talking to PTV, the Prime Minister said that the local government system and devolution of power introduced by President General Pervez Musharraf forms the basis of democracy.
He said that elections, which were held in a free, fair and transparent manner is an ample proof that people wanted democracy in Pakistan to strengthen and flourish.
The Prime Minister appreciated the system which, he said, was helping to resolve problems of the common man by their elected representatives at their doorsteps.
He said the government fulfilled the promise it had made to the people to ensure free and transparent elections.
Prime Minister noted with satisfaction the big turnout of voters, saying people enthusiastically took part in the polling process.
To a question, he said, the elections were held in a smooth and orderly manner in line with the code of conduct set by the election commission of Pakistan.
