President Pakistan Muslim League (PML) Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain on Tuesday called on Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and discussed with him first phase of local bodies (LB) elections and organisational matters.
During the meeting held at the Prime Minister House, the Prime Minister said first phase of the LB elections have completed satisfactorily. He expressed the confidence that these elections would not only strengthen the LB system but also strengthen democratic process by promoting a culture of tolerance and understanding.
A turnout of over 50 percent in the first phase is a testimony that moderate forces have prevailed, he added. The second phase of elections, he assured, will also be held in accordance with the code of conduct issued by the Election Commission (EC) and all necessary measure will be taken to ensure that voters can cast their vote in a free, fair and transparent manner.
The Prime Minister observed that though the elections were held on non-party basis the success of candidates who support the government reflects that they endorse the policies of the government.
Shujaat expressing satisfaction on the first phase on LB elections said this was reflective of government's policy of good governance.
