EC asks officials not to pressurise Nazims and councillors

01 Sep, 2005

The Election Commission (EC) has decided to take strong action against anyone found influencing Nazims and councilors to vote for district, Tehsil and town Nazims of their choice.
Sources in the Election Commission told Business Recorder that Acting Chief Election Commissioner Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar has asked the officials to take every step to ensure free and fair elections of district and Tehsil Nazims.
The local government elections have largely damaged the credibility and impartiality of the Election Commission as the charges of rigging in elections were even levelled by the ministers.
The opposition has demanded an independent and autonomous Election Commission for free and fair elections and termed the present body as powerless.
The sources said that the Election Commission has taken strong exception of these charges. They said that action would be taken against any government officials found involved in influencing or kidnapping the union council Nazims, councillors during the elections of district and Tehsil Nazims.
