03 Sep, 2005

Site meant for the 150-bed Children Hospital Complex (CHC) has been totally vacated and auction and demolition of the old residential quarters is on the anvil these days.
Dr Nazar Abbas Gardezi, Medical Superintendent (MS), children hospital complex, whose 150-bed portion is already operational and catering to the needs of the kids of South Punjab said although the hospital was still undergoing teething pains, it was attracting a large number of patients not only from the southern Punjab but also from adjacent parts of provinces of Sindh, NWFP and Balochistan.
Dr Gardezi said more than 5,000 patients were approaching the hospital every month in the out-patient department (OPD). Last year this average was 3,000 patients per month. On an average some 175 kids were being operated upon in the surgical department every month whereas last year this average was hardly 60 patients per month, he added.
To a question, the MS said against a total of 447 vacant posts 207 doctors and paramedics had been recruited while selection process continued for the remaining. He said despite the paucity of land and resources a swimming pool would be established within the complex premises.
