Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan will be the chief guest at a one-day Seminar on 'Disaster Preparedness and Development of a Warning System for Coastal Region of Pakistan', will be held at Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology (SSUET) on September 15.
In the wake of tsunami holocaust of December 26, 2004 in Sumatra, the Institute of Human Settlement and Environment at SSUET carried out detailed seismic studies of coastal region of Pakistan and drew an inference that Murray Ridge area located between 100-200 kms south-west of Karachi in the north Arabian Sea is an active seismic region and can be a threat to Karachi coastal region from tsunami, if a major earthquake occurs in the region.
An urgent need has, therefore, been felt to initiate action for the development of warning system along the coastal region of the country and undertake proper awareness and remedial measures for inhabitants settled in the vulnerable coastal areas, and this will form the subject matter of the seminar.
