Fishermen advised to stay away from sea

16 Sep, 2005

Fishermen's Co-operative Society (FCS) has prohibited travel of all fishing boats to open sea due to bad weather and gusty winds in Arabian Sea.
According to FCS spokesman here on Thursday, an emergency has also been imposed at Karachi Fish Harbour and asked boat owners to call back their boats in the deep sea and anchor at the shore.
He said that the FCS would not issue permission slips to launches for fishing voyage till the threat of sea storm is over. Member managing committee FCS Shujaat Ali Qarni has asked the staff of one window operation to remain at the harbour round the clock till Met Office issues clearance.
Meanwhile, a Met Office official said that No 1 Alert had been declared in the coastal areas and the department had advised fishing community to keep away from the open sea and remain on shore till the depression is over.
He said that a strong depression was persisting for the past couple of days due to severe low pressure and heavy winds were continued at a speed of 40 to 50 knots per hour in the sea while the surface speed was 25 knot per hour.
This severe weather can cause heavy rains along coastal areas of Pakistan. However, the threat of heavy rains was lesser in Karachi and Balochistan compared to Jati, Thatta, Keti Bandar and Shah Bandar, etc.
