Indonesian share prices closed 0.73 percent lower on Thursday on continued profit-taking amid growing concerns that next month's fuel price hikes could spark violent street protests, dealers said.
The Jakarta Stock Exchange composite index shed 7.721 points at 1,050.906 but was off an intra-day low of 1,046.443. Volume was 915.92 million shares worth 1.07 trillion rupiah (107 million dollars).
Declines led advancers 70 to 39, with 71 stocks unchanged.
The composite index rose 3.127 points in early morning trade but was unable to sustain its rebound after touching the minor support level of 1,050 points, Dongsuh Kolibindo Sekuritas branch manager Hendra Riyadi said.
Telkom dropped 50 rupiah to 5,000 while long distance operator Indosat also fell 50 to 5,050.
Astra International lost 350 to 10,300 rupiah while unit United Tractors also shed 25 to 3,800.
Bank Mandiri was down 20 to 1,370 rupiah while rival Bank Rakyat Indonesia fell 25 to 2,650.
