Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said on Friday that water security was an essential requirement for the future development in Pakistan. He was talking to A.N.G. Abbassi Chairman Technical Committee on Water Resources who paid a farewell call on him here at the Prime Minister House.
Prime Minister Aziz said water security was particularly relevant to the country's agricultural sector, which constitutes 26 percent of the GDP and employs 60 percent of the total labour force.
He appreciated the efforts of Abbassi and the committee and said its recommendations were currently being reviewed.
The Prime Minister said, once the review is completed, a decision would be taken in line with the country's national interest.
He further observed that Pakistan is rich in water resources and there is a need to tap the vast hydro potential. Development of water resources is vital not only for agriculture but also for power generation, he added.
