The US Congress has eulogised President General Pervez Musharraf as "a man of vision" and "an indispensable leader." It is stated in a citation read out at a dinner hosted by the American Jewish Congress (AJC) for President Musharraf.
Congressman Tom Lantos, reading out the citation, said the Congress noted the vision of enlightened moderation propounded by the Pakistan President.
At a time when the civilised world is engaged in a global war on extremism and terrorism, you have emerged as "the quintessential Muslim leader of moderation, decency, reason, and acceptance of pluralism," said the Democratic Representative of California.It stressed the need for tolerance and harmony and noted that President Musharraf has been following policies that promote peace and tolerance and curbing of terrorism. The US Congress referred to the determination to pursue dialogue with India for seeking peaceful resolution of differences and beginning to end half a century of animosity.
Referring to recent meeting of foreign ministers of Pakistan and Israel in Istanbul, it said that it was a noteworthy matter, in the light of Pakistan's weight in the Islamic world. It said that Pakistan was a true ally of the United States in the ongoing war on terrorism, and referred to action taken against operatives of al-Qaeda.
The citation appreciated President Musharraf as "an enlightened Muslim leader" who accepted the AJC's invitation to attend its dinner. The US Senate and the House of Representatives deeply appreciate efforts taken by Pakistan towards "a new Pakistan" and close US-Pakistan friendship.
Congressman Lantos said the US Congress recognises the worthy efforts of President Pervez Musharraf for promoting cause of peace and harmony and announces award of citation. Later, he presented the citation to President General Pervez Musharraf.
