560 illegal cable operators closed down

The Pakistan Electronic Media Authority (Pemra) in its countrywide campaign against illegal Cable Operators and Pornography has closed down 560 illegal Cable Operators and taken action against 86 Cable Operators showing pornographic and unethical contents in their network and fined them to the tune of Rs 1 million.
Showing pornographic and unethical contents was a clear-cut violation of authority's code of ethics or poor quality services in violation of Section 26 clause 5 of the Pemra Ordinance, sources in Pemra said.
Pemra was receiving complaints from all over the country against various legal and illegal Cable Operators for showing some pornographic channels and programmes through their cable networks from time to time, they said adding that the authority took various steps to control the propagation of obscenity and pornography by the Cable Operators including about 1250 licensed Cable Operators have been informed through letters to dawn upon them the importance of our cultural values.
