Taiwan stocks fell 1.57 percent to their lowest close in nearly four months on Thursday as heavily foreign-invested shares like UMC tumbled with US stocks after renewed gains in oil prices.
The TAIEX share index ended with a loss of 95.28 points at 5,972.06, breaking through once-staunch technical support at 6,000 points for its lowest close since June 1.
Turnover was moderate at T$73.28 billion, off slightly from T$75.13 billion in Wednesday's session. But buy orders reached 533,809 versus 422,585 sell orders, a sign of active bargain-hunting, analysts said.
The over-the-counter market's TAISDAQ index fell 0.78 percent to 115.84, while October TAIEX index futures fell 85 points, or 1.40 percent, to 5,979.
