The dollar bounced back against the Swiss franc in early European trade on Thursday after heavy greenback losses in the previous session as markets feared hurricane Rita might damage the US economy.
Yet looking further ahead, worries in Switzerland about the outcome of a key weekend referendum on whether to extend immigration rights to the 10 new member-states of the European Union created market uncertainty for the franc.
The dollar last traded at 1.2738/41 Swiss francs, up a tad from 1.2702/05 francs in late trading in Europe on Wednesday. The euro stood at 1.5525/31 francs, from 1.5522/26 francs on Wednesday.
