SCO providing poor telecom services in Northern Areas

26 Sep, 2005

People of the Northern Areas are facing tremendous problems due to substandard services being provided to them by the Special Communication Organisation (SCO).
SCO is the sole communication service provider (telecom organisation) in the entire area, which has not only monopoly in the field but also has defective communication system. Against the government claims of tremendous development in the telecommunication filed, the communication system of all districts of Northern Areas has been poor and it is rare to connect any dialed number at the time of need.
Under the SCO service, it is considered a big fortune to connect a dialed number to any part of Northern Areas from other cities or within the area.
Despite the frequent complaints, and demands for replacement of SCO with Pakistan Telecommunication Company limited (PTCL), the concerned authorities turn deaf ear on the issue.
Being a mountainous area, no mobile company has still been able to launch its service in the area.
The communication problems mostly are being faced by the consumers of district Ghizer, Diamer, Baltistan, Ghanche Hunza and Nager of the Northern Areas, due to its substandard service and absent of alternative company.
